5 Ways to Elevate Your Living Room

Have you ever thought to yourself, “my living room is good, but I know it can be better?” If so, we are here to give you a few of our favorite tips to take your living room from “not bad” to STUNNING! There are simple ways to elevate your living room and make it feel like a designer’s been there. Let’s start with number one.. Layering!

Layering different textures and patterns is a perfect way to elevate your living room. I love to layer pillows with different fabrics, like a linen pattern in front of a velvet. And to add even more texture, toss a wool or knit throw blanket behind the pillows. I also love layering rugs - a large natural rug like a sisal with a smaller Oushak or traditional rug layered on top gives extra dimension and warmth to a room. There are lots of ways to layer materials and decor, but these are just a few of my favorites!

1. Gold side table 2. Bone & horn box 3. Petrified wood bookends 4. Scalloped picture frame 5. Match stick holder

Styling coffee tables is one of my favorite ways to elevate a living space. This is the perfect spot to add flowers, coffee table books, or your favorite candle. I like to also include a personal item to a coffee table. This could be a bowl with collected match boxes from your travels, or a sentimental decorative object from your grandmother’s house. Another tip is to store TV remotes in a decorative box. This allows necessary living room items to be in reach, but not an eye sore. Lastly, I love to add trays to a coffee table. Trays add an extra layer of decor that can also be accessible for multiple different uses.

My third tip to enhance your living space goes along the same lines as styling a coffee table… styling bookshelves! This might be one of my favorite areas to decorate and accessorize. My biggest tip for styling a bookshelf is to mix old and new. Start by pulling your favorite sentimental pieces. Decor from travel, favorite family photos, pieces from antique stores, anything you would consider a little treasure! Place those throughout the bookshelf, then fill in the gaps with new items that you love. They key is balance. If you’ve found yourself in need of more antique pieces, or one of a kind accessories, check out our Collected items on Sweet Home by SCD. Or if you are in need of newer decor items, we have beautiful styling pieces here that will pair perfectly with your sentimental treasures.

Let’s talk about art lights… this is such a simple way to enhance any space, especially a living room. Art lights are very easy to install and really bring that designer’s touch to a wall or bookshelf. An art light can go above any piece of art, it doesn’t have to be an expensive, fine piece. Art can be your kid’s drawings they brought home from school, family photos, or framed postcards from your travels. Think outside the box when it comes to art! This is where you can get creative and bring in your family’s personality. You can make art from whatever has meaning to you.

Lastly, and maybe one of my favorite topics.. lamps! Lamps are a great way to add pops of your favorite textures and colors. This can be in the lamp itself or the shade. I love adding light blues and greens, even olive and rust color lamps to a living room. If you are really looking to elevate your space, I would recommend getting a patterned fabric shade. There are premade shades, or you could go the custom route! In addition to colorful table lamps, I love adding in a floor lamp here and there. These are great to place next to a sofa or in a seating nook! Lamps are such a great way to enhance your space and make it feel like a designer has been there!

The living room is one of the most used spaces in your home. We hope these 5 tips help you make design choices best fit for your family, while still feeling like a designer has been there!
