All Things Pillows!

Pillows are by far one of my favorite accessories to add to any room.. so naturally I decided to write a whole blog post about them! There are so many different types and styles of pillows, so let’s dive right in!

Starting in the living room, pillows are a great way to bring in color and texture. For a sofa, I like to use what I call an “anchor” pillow as a larger pillow, with an “accent” pillow in front, like the picture above. Typically, one pillow is monochrome, small print, or solid, and the other is a fun pattern with different colors. This helps bring texture and depth into your space. I also like for these pillows to have a few inches difference in size. So the anchor pillow may be around 20”-22”, and the accent pillow may be closer to 18”-20” - make sense? This helps the layering feel strategic and thought through.

Another way to add a “designer’s touch” to pillows (and this goes for all pillows), is to make the edges have different detailings. So on one pillow I may do a solid welt, and the other I may do an accent flange. And these welts or flanges could be in the same fabric as your pillow, or it could be an accent color. Or if you’re going for a more modern look, you could do a knife edge. There are so many options to choose from - this is why I love this topic!

Not only are there so many pillow options for a living space, but there are just as many, if not more, for a bed! I love to mix textures and styles of pillows on all types of beds. Typically, I like to choose one fabric for Euro pillows, and another fabric for an accent pillow in front. The Euro’s can have a knife edge, if I’m trying to go more modern, or a flange or welt too. In front of those, I either do a bolster pillow, or a lumbar. Lumbar pillows tend to lean more modern, while bolsters lean a little more traditional. And if you want to take it a step further, add a trim inset from either end on either the bolster or the lumbar! This definitely will make your bed look like a designer’s been there!

There are a few unconventional types of pillows I love to add to a bed in the right setting. Sometimes for a queen or full bed, I love to do an oversized Euro. These typically are 28” x 36”, compared to a regular size Euro which is 26” x 26”. I love this look in the right setting!

Another way I love to switch things up is to do 2 smaller pillows instead of a lumbar or bolster. So stick with your regular sized Euro pillows, but do 20” pillows in front instead of a longer singular pillow.

Let’s talk about pillow inserts. The biggest tip I have for you is to size up 1 inch from the size of your shams. So if you have a 20” sham, order a 21” pillow insert. This help fill the sham entirely, without any floppy corners. And speaking of inserts… have you ever tried to stuff a pillow? Well let me tell you, it is not for the weak!
